Reynolds was born in San Francisco in 1849. His father, Timothy Reynolds Sr., was a successful businessman who made his fortune in the California Gold Rush. When Timothy was just a year old, his family moved to New York City. Timothy’s father died when he was just eight years old, and his mother died when he was ten. As an orphan, Timothy was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Boston.
In Boston, Timothy attended public schools and excelled in his studies. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at Harvard University. He graduated from Harvard in 1871 with a degree in geology.
After graduation, Timothy Reynolds took a job with the United States Geological Survey. He was assigned to survey the Yellowstone region of Wyoming. Reynolds and his team were the first to map the geysers and hot springs of Yellowstone. They also discovered the world’s first known geyser, Old Faithful.
In 1872, Reynolds and his team were camping in the Yellowstone region when they were attacked by a group of Native Americans. Reynolds was killed in the attack. His body was never recovered.
The Attack on Reynolds and His Team
On the morning of August 7, 1872, Timothy Reynolds and his team were camped near the Yellowstone River. They were in the process of mapping the geysers and hot springs of the region.
